Wisdom tooth removal and other extractions available with Franklin, OH area dentists

Drs. Everhart and Kori in Franklin, OH are dentists who provide a wide variety of general, cosmetic, and restorative procedures for patients in the community. In addition, they also offer solutions for patients who have problems with their wisdom teeth. The wisdom teeth develop in the late teen years or early adulthood and tend to become a problem. The teeth can become impacted or may erupt through the gum line and contribute to problems such as cavities or disease. The team at K&E are proud to offer extractions to address these concerns.

What are the wisdom teeth?

The wisdom teeth are teeth at the back of the mouth that are the last to come through the gum line. Because of this, there is often not enough room for them. This can cause them to become impacted, pushing against the existing teeth and causing extreme pain for some of our patients. If there is room for the wisdom teeth, they may erupt, but they are so far back in the mouth that they can be difficult to keep clean. Patients may experience cavities and periodontal disease because of the eruption of wisdom teeth. Most patients have four, with one in each corner of the mouth, but it is possible to have more. The dentist can view the position of the wisdom teeth with x-rays.

Why remove them?

Because wisdom teeth can negatively affect the health of the smile, it is often encouraged to have them removed. They may be removed because:

  • They are decayed
  • They are impacted
  • They are putting a patient at risk for gum disease
  • They may affect treatments such as orthodontics
  • There is no room for them in the smile

The wisdom teeth can be removed and will have no ill effects on the function or appearance of the smile.

How are wisdom teeth removed?

Pliers for wisdom tooth removal by a dentist

The way a dentist will remove the teeth will vary depending on how they try to erupt. If the teeth are impacted underneath the gums, the dentist will have to perform surgical extractions. This means that the dentist will access the teeth by cutting into the gums and extracting the teeth accordingly. This is more invasive than a simple extraction. Simple extractions are performed when the tooth is easy to reach because it has already erupted through the gums. This is less invasive and is faster than surgical extractions. Determining the type of extraction necessary for a patient is done by evaluating the individual with x-rays and a physical examination during a consultation appointment and deciding the best course of action to achieve the results desired. Drs. Everhart and Kori will provide treatment in the most conservative way possible.

Cost of treatment

Patients who are faced with wisdom tooth removal may be worried about the cost of treatment. If patients have dental insurance plans, a portion of the treatment may be covered by their benefits. Patients who do not have dental insurance, or those who have plans that do not provide coverage for wisdom tooth extractions, can work with our front office team to develop a payment plan or financing option that works best for their specific budget. We want patients to be able to obtain the treatments they need, even if they do not have dental coverage. We welcome patients to schedule a consultation appointment to get an accurate quote for services, and then work with our team to determine payment solutions.
